Montessori Cottage

The Toddler environment is designed
for children 13 months through 3
years old. The mixed age group
fosters self-directed learning,
independence and a strong sense of
community. The focus in the Toddler
environment is social development & developmental skills. The classroom
is divided into five areas: practical life, language, sensorial, manipulative
and art (see Philosophy ). The materials in the Toddler environment foster
independence, eye/hand coordination, discrimination of the senses, oral
language and motor skills. The lessons are individual, simple and
concrete. On a weekly basis the children attend “Music Time”, led by long
time children’s music instructor, Mr. Pete. Additionally, the children
attend an Art Exploration class weekly. The teacher to child ratio in the
Toddler class is 1:5.
